In January 2016, GLOW partnered with Sunny Money Malawi to provide 500 portable solar lights in remote, off the grid villages surrounding the Nkhata Bay region of Malawi.
These are very rural and agriculturally-based communities, which will greatly benefit from the financial savings opportunity as a result of our solar donation. Although these households were not required to pay back the cost of the lights, they were required to open a savings account with a 15% deposit of the total cost of the light to prove their financial responsibility and credibility to be eligible for entering the program.
GLOW and Sunny Money distributed all 500 lights distributed all 500 lights during the first week of a month long stay. The remaining weeks were dedicated to offering support, answering questions, and solving any complications with the products.
GLOW’s founder, Kayla Nielsen, also spread light through the gift of yoga and increased education in the schools, as well.
The end of the month was spent collecting initial feedback on the solar light to conclude the greatest benefit of the donation for these specific communities.
